Attila József

Attila József (1905-1937), one of the great Hungarian lyric poets, dissects the crisis of the human mind and of human society in moving, modern verse. His poetry is the fulfillment of a tortured life which began with so much buoyancy and hope and ended in devastating poverty and mental illness. He is presented here, for the first time to American and English readers, thirty six years after his suicide death under the wheels of a train in a provincial Hungarian town. Originally published by the Hungarian Cultural Foundation in 1973.
