From the “…..Much work is being done on the psychological and sociological aspects of alcohol dependence, but many experts feel that the ultimate answer to the problem is biological, at the cellular or sub-cellular level. The biological aspects of alcohol — how alcohol is metabolized, what effects it has on body chemistry – was the subject of the third Int’l Symposium on Advances in Mental Science held at the Texas Research Institute of Mental Sciences in November 1969. Included here are 18 papers read at the symposium by distinguished and innovative researchers in the field — discussions of alcohol’s interactions with other drugs, studies of its influence on behavior, and new hypotheses regarding the possible etiological role of alkaloids formed in the body after alcohol is metabolized.
