A penetrating psychological analysis. The Gambler, one of the bitterest creations of Dostoyevsky, is an autobiographical novel that describes the sad experiences that the great writer had. The central characters are all gamblers. Sometimes they win others they lose but their hopes are not so much for the profit but for the emotions of the game. All this leads to a morbid atmosphere of crude realism combined with the marvelous description of characters that distinguishes the work of the illustrious Russian creator. Though, without the depths of other novels from the author, The Gambler is one of Dostoyevsky’s most exciting works.
