Evening Land

From Barabbas onward Par Lagerkvist’s main theme was man’s complicated relationship to God. Evening Land, in addition, deals with approaching old age, the mystery of life and death, the question of God, the proximity of death. In it, Lagerkvist can be said to represent both modern believers and non-believers in a transitional time for religion.
Brought out now, just a year after Lagerkvist’s death, and two years after the death of W.H. Auden, the co-translator, this volume is a poignant reminder of two great poets.
