The problem with saints is, they are not interesting. Albert Einstein’s quotation about Gandhi (“Generations to come…will scarce believe that such a one as this ever in flesh and blood walked upon this earth.”) is overdone. Thus William L. Shirer’s contribution is a welcome breath of fresh air. He paints a man who is not only a saintly apostle on non-violence, but a shrewd politician, an impious wit, a revolutionary whose zeal was balanced by charity. Shirer, a Pulitzer Prize-winning author, became a personal friend of Mahatma Gandhi when he covered the independence movement in India for the Chicago Tribune. His book shed light on a man who not only influenced history, but pointed the way for Martin Luther King and the Civil Rights movement in the United States.
