The Guide is Number Five of a series of guidebooks describing the entire Appalachian Trail from Maine to Georgia. The other books in the series are listed on the back cover.
The book is organized with general and background material at the beginning. Included in this section are information on the history of the Appalachian Trail, the Appalachian Trail Conference, Keystone Trails Association, the nature of the Trail and land ownership in Pennsylvania and general information for the assistance of hikers.
The bulk of the Guide, making up something more than three fourths of the total, consists of detailed trail description. The Trail in Pennsylvania is divided into 14 sections of varying lengths. Trail information is given for each section, with general material listed first, followed by detailed description in columnar format, North to South, then South to North.
In preparing this guidebook, it has been assumed that hikers will supply themselves with the Trail maps published by Keystone Trails Association, based on U. S. Geological Survey maps. For the Trail south of the Susquehanna River, the maps published by the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club may also be of interest to the hiker.
