1969, oversize hardcover edition, Johns Hopkins Press, Baltimore. 421 pages. A lovely title, with photos, diagrams, formulas, and fold-out illustrated pages. Here is an in-depth book which tells of four archaeological expeditions to South Arabia, between 1950 and 1953. Much of this material has been gathered from Hajar Bin Humeid, the oldest known town site excavated in the Arabian peninsula. This area was first settled around the 11th century B.C. The author also provides an incredible, in-depth investigation of the techniques of the South Arabian potter. This is a master work by a learned man who, at the time of publication, was curator at the Smithsonian Institution. Beautifully printed work, on heavy stock, a title that shows that scholarly material can be presented with real pizzazz.
