The brothers Karamazov, one of the greatest novels in the history of literature is, next to Crime and Punishment, the culmination of Dostoyevskys genius. It narrates the story of the brothers Dimitri, Iván and Aliosha and the illegitimate child Smerdiakov, quite different between them but united with a primitive hatred toward their father Fedor Karamazov, a squandering man without any principles. In essence, the novel describes, as it is said by one of his characters, that “”the heart is nothing but a battlefield in which God and evil face each other””. This brilliant novel is an accurate description of human beings, a novel of ideas but with a heart-breaking argument of such interest that does not decline for a moment. Dostoyevsky was forecasting a cycle of novels that was interrupted by his death, but the work itself is so finished and brilliant that it is unanimously considered to be one of the big achievements of all universal literature
