Biography of the pinoeer educator and philosopher Alexander Sutherland Neill, (1883 – 1973) who in 1921 had opened his groundbreaking and controversial boarding school Summerhill. Neill believed that children would be best served educationally with complete freedom – thus attending lessons was not compulsory & pupils were consulted, on equal terms with the teachers, on all matters pertaining to the running of the school. The school was made to fit the child and not the other way around. The school is still open to day & many of his ideas have been adopted by later educational reformers.
