Paper Swordsmen: Jin Yong And The Modern Chinese Martial Arts Novel

Hamm (Asian languages and literature, U. of Washington) focuses on Yong’s work as a body of Chinese-language literature, and mentions their adaptations to other media only to note their influence on the reception of the literary originals. Jin Yong is the pen name of Zha Liangyong, or Louis Cha, who was born in Zhejiang province in 1924 and relocated to Hong Kong in 1948 when he began his publishing his martial arts fiction. The study is based on Hamm’s doctoral dissertation for the University of California-Berkeley; parts of it have been presented and published.
