Himself a seaman for twenty years, Joseph Conrad (1857 – 1924) wrote these stories with an intimate knowledge of both the sea and those whose lives revolved around the sea. He based many of his stories on his own experience, including one of his most well known books, Heart of Darkness , which revolves around his various adventures in the Congo.
