Harold Bloom’s Biocritiques are designed to introduce the reader to the life and work of the world’s literary masters. Each volume begins with Harold Bloom’s essay “The Work in the Writer” and a volume-specific introduction also written by Professor Bloom. Following these unique introductions is an engaging biography that discusses the major life events and important literary accomplishments of the author under consideration.

Furthermore, each volume includes an original critique that not only traces the themes, symbols, and ideas apparent in the author’s works, but strives to put those works into cultural and historical perspectives. In addition to the original critique is a brief selection of significant critical essays previously published on the author and his or her works followed by a concise informative chronology of the writer’s life. Finally, each volume concludes with a bibliography of the writer’s works, a list of additional readings, and an index of important themes and ideas.
