Tess of the D’Urbervilles

Tess Durbeyfield is the charming daughter of a villager in the vale of Blackmoor situated in Hardy’s Wessex countryside. Her father is beset by the notion of high lineage of the d’Urbervilles, the perished local squires. An attempt to revive contact with a namesake kin by Tess’s parents leads to her reluctant visit to their estate and results in her seduction, unleashing a torrent of suffering for Tess. The powerful plot then develops into a compelling story set in a rural Victorian backdrop as defenseless Tess struggles to balance her relationship with two vastly different men.
