The Alexandria Quartet (named after Alexandria, Egypt where the action occurs) is Durrell’s masterpiece. Although the work can be considered a single novel, the action of which is told from four different perspectives, it was published as a tetrology with each of the four volumes named after a prominent character. There is in fact a fifth character which is the city of Alexandria itself. An ancient city, founded by Alexander the Great, we see it in all its shabby glory during the 1930s and the war years of the 1940s. These books are a joy to read, and everyone should read them.
