I grew up knowing about the Battle of Murfreesboro, but at some point the name changed to the Battle of Stones River, a river that flows past the town of Murfreesboro. Actually two battles featuring major engagements occurred on Dec. 31, 1862 and Jan. 2, 1863, after which Confederate Gen. Braxton Bragg retired his forces. The battle was a turning point in Bragg’s career as Pres. Davis lost confidence in him as a commander and replaced him with Gen. Joseph Johnston. Maps by George Skoch.
