The Moonstone

OXFORD UNIVERSITY PRESS celebrates the World’s Classics series by reissuing some of the best loved novels in their original hardback format, with special introduction by today’s most distinguished writers.

The Moonstone (1868), one of the first and greatest detective stories, tells of the theft of a sacred diamond and the efforts of Sergeant Cuff, the policeman investigating the crime, to solve the mystery.

P. D. James is a well-known crime writer whose police detective, Adam Dalgliesh, traces his ancestry to Sergeant Cuff. Among her novels are A Taste for Death (1986), Original Sin (1994), and A Certain Justice (1997).
