Drawing on her background both in language and in the study of Prussian diplomat Humbolt (1767-1835), Stubbs argues that his philosophy of language should been seen as a coherent system in which he illustrates the interaction of thought, perception, and imagination. She finds him to be a precursor of modern developments in comparative linguistic studies and ethnolinguistics, exploring the interrelationship of language and culture through his studies of the Basque, Chinese, and Sanskrit languages.
